Dear Editor, Why has the Day Surgery in the Andover Hospital stopped doing endoscopy and is it permanent? There has been a great deal of time and money spent on the unit and I feel it is such a shame that the Andover people have to travel to Winchester or Basingstoke when it could be done here.
Name and address supplied Dear Editor, What part of ‘stay home, protect the NHS, save lives’ does Tony Barron (letters Feb 19) not understand? Does he think that having people out and about delivering leaflets is a good enough reason NOT to adhere to Government guidance or does he think like some that the rules shouldn’t apply.
Story updated at 9:02 p.m. Monday:
The Lawrence school district made two administrative appointments Monday, including a new leader for Lawrence High School.
The district announced in a news release that Jessica Bassett would be the next principal of the high school beginning July 1. Bassett is currently the principal of Southeast High School in Kansas City, Mo. She will succeed Cynthia Johnson, who has served as interim principal since 2019. LHS serves about 1,600 students between ninth and 12th grades.
The district also announced that Larry Englebrick would become the next executive director of facilities and operations on March 15. Englebrick is currently the director of facilities and operations for the Kansas City, Mo., school district.
School days Derek Kane’s “Back Through The Pages” last week included the Portway Penguin that headmaster Jack Reed purchased in 1966. The attached photograph (above) taken in 1972 may bring back a few memories for some of your readers. As an ex-pupil of Portway I remember climbing the steps and sitting in the cockpit during our allotted time in the week for entering the plane. It smelt a bit musty in there, but you could still move the joy stick and pretend you were in control. The main playground also contained a caravan, an old open fire engine, and a steam roller which I think was called the Portway Puffer. Sadly I don’t think safety regulations would permit these to be in any playground today, but we enjoyed playing on them.
Staff Report

The Lawrence school district will be looking for a new facilities director as their current one has chosen to leave the position for a job in Johnson County.
Tony Barron, the district’s executive director of facilities and operations, is resigning from the position on Jan. 29, the district announced in a news release. He has accepted a similar position for the Blue Valley school district in Overland Park.
The district’s facilities and operations department oversees the district’s buildings, grounds, custodial, and maintenance functions. The district also credits Barron, who has been in the position since 2013, for overseeing many facility improvement projects in the district, including the ongoing $46 million renovation of Lawrence High School.
