The choice was between three candidates: current president, police Sgt. Tommy Reyes, considered a calming voice during the George Floyd protests; Lt. Ramon Carr, vice president of the cityâs Black police union; and Javier Ortiz, a controversial past president currently on indefinite paid suspension after a lengthy string of insulting racist comments and social media posts.
