The George W. Hill Correctional Facility, the last for-profit prison in Pennsylvania, has been taken over by Delaware County after 24 years of private control. The GEO Group, which has run the prison since 1998, handed over responsibility Wednesday. The prison has faced allegations that inmates and staffers were mistreated.
The deprivatization of the George W. Hill Correctional Facility from GEO Group’s hands is complete but the work addressing “chronic over-incarceration” is far from over.
The prison that was previously privately run will return to local government control in April and Warden Laura Williams’ background in behavioral health could help to bring a much-needed culture change.
