service getting underway right now. bringing many people here to a junior who lost his life. the bells toll at notre dame s sacred heart calling out to students and faculty and they re answering. most never knew declan sullivan but they re there anyway. that is what makes this notre dame. we re a community here. we re supporting our own. there is no greater sadness for a university community than the death of one of its students. reporter: that death came suddenly, tragically as declan was filming a football practice yesterday from a hydraulic scissor lift from 50 feet up. a strong gust brought the platform down with sullivan with it. most alarming to many on the campus, the twitter messages he sent out in the day. a joke about dying on the job. then later in the minutes before his death fear about working so high in such high wind. he said it was terrifying. he was wondering why he was up there. and i know it was a very chilling last thought for a lot of people. re
side. tonight, still the winds are blowing vigorously. 23, gusting 34 in chicago. 18 gusting 37 at midway in chicago. other gusts, sustained 24 at dekalb. look at some of the wind gusts, over 60 miles an hour during the course of the day. the storm, which produced the lowest barometric pressure ever recorded in the states of minnesota and wisconsin, records in those states go back to 1870, that storm has lifted into canada, but slowing down now. you can see there, 23 states, including the chicago area, where there s a high wind advisory, actually a wind advisory, in effect through tomorrow. the storm producing at this hour 51 mile-per-hour wind gusts in minneapolis/st. paul and 32 mile-an-hour gusts here. so lots of wind still left in this system. there s a blizzard in minnesota, and there have been tornadoes in the south. this was the biggest severe weather day in the united states since august 5. there were two dozen tornadoes, 275 severe weather reports, and we had four of
night. we could be dealing with the winds from this ma amom storm that will be almost 2200-miles across. for three days into thursday night in this area the highest winds coming in tomorrow and tomorrow night and wednesday. here you can see the temperatures unseasonably warm. that s part of the problem because as the coolest air of the season dives into the country, this incredible jet stream is developed with over 200 miles per hour winds and by morning about the time a line of thunderstorms comes through these winds will be right overhead where the storm can t reach up, grab the wind and bring it down to the surface and then a huge storm develops in northern minnesota. this covers a good part of the country. back in 1940. that was a deadly storm that produced incredible winds. it looked like that was 70 years ago like this storm could be in the ballpark with that, even stronger. as it effects the chicago area with its strong winds our barometer read will be driving during t
