Family of Tommie McGlothen files federal wrongful death lawsuit

SHREVEPORT, La. – The family of a man who last spring in police custody has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city, the police chief and officers. James Carter, of The Cochran Firm in Metairie, who filed the lawsuit Tuesday in federal court, is asking for unspecified damages on behalf of the family of Tommie McGlothen Jr. In October, Carter sent a demand letter to the city saying he would not sue if the city agreed to pay a $25 million settlement. The city took no action. Names as defendants in the lawsuit are the city of Shreveport, its insurance company, Police Chief Ben Raymond and four Shreveport police officers.

The family of Tommie McGlothen, Jr., along with family attorney James Carter of The Cochran Firm, filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Shreveport Chief of Police Ben Raymond and four of the officers involved in McGlothen s death.   The lawsuit comes after a $25 million settlement demand by the family back in October, naming the City of Shreveport, Raymond, and the four SPD officers who were indicted in the case   Treona McCarter, Brian Ross, D Marea Johnson, and James LeClare. Carter told The Times on Tuesday there was no formal response to the settlement demand which is why they moved forward with the lawsuit as promised.
