FSU researchers create supernova simulation
Caroline Lewis
For over 400 years, nobody has been able to witness a supernova as it occurs in the sky. Using technology, scientists at FSU have allowed students to have a more up-close experience by creating a simulation which demonstrates how a supernova explodes.
Focusing on white dwarf stars, the simulation works with Type 1a supernovae using computational analysis and research investigating the conditions that lead to its explosion. The study was published in the Royal Astronomical Society’s Monthly Notices.
Tomasz Plewa, FSU professor of scientific computing and co-author of the study, supervised the research and led his graduate and undergraduate students through their analysis of the data.
