politico assesses that in recent weeks, the sheer volume of acute threats, both criminal and civil, have put trump in a vice unlike any he s faced before. another very bad week for the ex-president, is where we start the hour with some of our favorite reporters and friends. mike schmidt is here, his by line is on that new reporting about mike pence. also joining us, charlie savage, new york times washington correspondent. plus political strategist matt dowd is here and barbara mcquade is back to help us sift through it all. mike, take us through what you re reporting about mike pence. well, we know that in the past civil weeks before the special counsel was appointed, tom wyndham, the lead january 6th investigator, reached out to pence s side to say that the justice department was interested in questioning the former vice president. now, there have been a lot of
trump is trying to distract people from the other investigation, which is the january 6th investigation which arguably, frankly, is perhaps more perilous for him. and we learned that my colleague jamie gangel and i learned that the justice department had sent another subpoena to the national archives. this is a grand jury subpoena. this is his second one which is seeking additional documents in addition to what they had earlier gotten back three months ago which, you know, that first request was for stuff that the archives had produced to the january 6 committee on capitol hill. so, this is a subsequent request where the justice department and tom wyndham, who is the prosecutor looking at the broader picture of what happened here, which was the effort to impede the transfer of power, getting these fake electors organized around seven states. they re looking at the higher
importantly, as you pointed out, the justice department today in a court filing said they had gotten a second warrant to look through some of the things they found on john eastman s phone. because eastman claims that he was a lawyer for the former president, this sets up some potential attorney/client privilege issues is, which is what prosecutors are trying to get ahead. by the way, that warrant, the court document that was filed today was signed by the u.s. attorney, the assistant u.s. attorney, his name is tom wyndham, who is helping to manage the overall case, the case is that is right now circling around the former president, erin. thank you very much, evan. you know, as evan says, circling around. you have hundreds of people charged farther out, it s getting closer and closer and closer. i want to go to a former senior counsel to ken starr during the white water investigation into president clinton.
