The attack on American exceptionalism (“American exceptionalism really?,” April 23) by Tom Weiner and Allen Davis dismisses the important role the U.S has played historically as a model for other countries.
There is no question that American self interests has led to the inappropriate meddling in the politics of other countries and we have often sided with ruthless dictators to serve those self interests. However all one has to do is look at the countries who lived under Soviet rule prior to its collapse to see the sharp differences with the U.S.

I just finished the April 24 opinion piece submitted by Allen J. Davis and Tom Weiner [American exceptionalism – really?]. I found it disturbing and disrespectful to a person who loves this country and truly believes there is none better!
Personally, I was blessed with a 30-year career that took me to every corner of this great country. It was a privilege to meet some of the most “exceptional” people in the world; civilian and military, native and immigrant, man and woman. All believed they were part of an “exceptional” experiment called America and they call it home. Most strive daily to make their place, their own part of this “exceptional experiment” by toil and service for the common good. Some fewer than one would think for some inexplicable ideological confusion, or out of misguided self-righteousness, or as some suspect, out-right mind control believe this nation to be “the evil�

With each passing event the latest being an insurrection on our Capitol, hate crimes against Asian Americans, voter suppression efforts by the Trumplican party with 253 bills in 43 states and the continuation via police brutality of 400 years of oppression of African Americans we are left to wonder what it will take for far too many of our leaders and our countrywomen and men to realize we are not exceptional – unless we change it to mean exceptionally troubled as a country.
It is essential that we understand the sources of the destructive belief in our country’s exceptionalism. None of this is to say that our country lacks the capacity to be better than we’ve been or that there haven’t been moments in history where we rose to the challenge. No, the two big points are that for reasons that undermine efforts to do better by our citizens, as a nation we have:
