Mothers at what is still considered the largest dinners ever held at the white house. As president nixon said, it rained all day and much of the evening, and the south long was south lawn was soggy when the guests started arriving for dinner. Many of the womens long dresses got splattered with mud, but nothing would dampen the spirits of that night. In the first year of his presidency, nixon met with the wives and mothers of the pows during the christmas season. He wrote that the women spoke respectfully and passionately about the need to get their husbands and sons returned home to american soil. The lunar module, the Lunar Landing craft, in earth orbit once. Before we would commit man to a Lunar Landing, there were still a number of things to be worked out. This was the mission of apollo 10. In the words of its commander, tom stafford, to sort out all the unknowns and pave the way for a Lunar Landing. It was a veteran crew. Spacecraft commander tom stafford had flown on gemini six and nine. Learner module pilot eugene cernan, the lunar module pilot, had flown with stafford on gemini nine. John young had been on gemini three and gemini 10. They would face problems on apollo 10, problems that would be solved for apollo 11. Most will be minor. But they would be solved.
