Mr. Schatz mr. President . The presiding officer the senator from hawaii. Mr. Schatz i ask unanimous consent to vacate the quorum call. The presiding officer without objection, the quorum call be suspended. Mr. Schatz thank you 34r79s. Last night the Senate Passed the native american memorial act of 2013. The bill now heads to the president for his signature. I introduced the native american memorial amendments act in may and worked with representative mull ins since he introduced an identical bill in the house in june. This bill is needed to facilitate construction of a longawaited native American Veterans memorial on the national mall. This memorial has languished for almost 20 years since the passage of the original native American Veterans memorial establishments act. This legislation builds off of the great work of senator mccain, who introduced the initial bill to authorize a native Veterans Memorial and senator inouye who was the Indian Affairs chairman who works to enact the la
Thank you. Nelson. In my 20 years of daily and weekly engagement with brie bsh brazil, which, by the way, in this room i know is a flash in the pan. Than our moderator. So i dont know if the rules permit this, but given weve heard tom shannon side of the u. S. Side of this. Could i ask our moderator. What will it take from the brazilian side for us to put this disclosure issue behind us . I think its a recognition in brazil of the importance of the relationship. You can see it coming from the Business Community that feels that brazil has, in a sense, somewhat isolated itself in the trade arena, for instance. This is daily [inaudible] part of the national conversation. You had the recent speech in againer have addressing this directly significantly is very close to the president. Hes very close to who is likely to run for the governor of the [inaudible] hes now the minister of Development Industry of commerce in brazil. So you have this and the signal from society that society is more a
Do not track through developing some tools for consumers is very important so consumers can control the extent to which they are tracked online. Do not track is an issue that some folks have been dealing with very deeply. And have go oned some tools. Some of the browsers have developed tools. Some trade groups have developed tools. And some standard organizations are working on developing tools around tracking online. I would like to see more progress made there. And finally, you know, when comes to legislation here in the United States, all that ive been talking about thus far havent been in the legislative sphere. Its been more in term of developing best practice and providing better tools to consumers so they understand how the data is being collected and used for what purpose orth. We can use some more laws in the United States. Baseline privacy legislation would help. Dont need to worry about and would make clear to consumers you know what their rights are and what could happen to
People in rome that sued the u. S. Government for what was wiretapping and countersuit actually rejected by the Supreme Court on the grounds the we couldnt prove standing, two months before the ed snowden disclosures which makes me wonder if we could have proved standing two months later, choosing the phrase the disclosure problem makes it seem less serious than i think it really is and it is not just on its human rights levelland the right to privacy but on a commercial and political level. It fundamentally has to do with trust. I understand it is corporate as well as domestic, but i would like to hear you respond to that because i do think it discounts the seriousness of what is happening. The second is with respect to education and the number of brazilian students coming to the United States which is enormous how has it gone from the u. S. To brazil. I have a sense it is much less but i dont know the numbers and what you see as the future and that side . I will address the last one
At a time in which theres been no cataclysmic event that forces us into reforming or renewing these institutions, but a clear recognition that the institutions are becoming increasingly less relevant and increasinglyless capable of addressing some of the very large problems and concerns that the world faces. And be so our ability to kind of reestablish momentum in the u. S. brazil relationship and to insure that it gets back on the kind of meaningful tack that i think both of our governments and our societies want is going to have a big impact on our ability to conduct this kind of long diplomacy. Because ultimately, many, many years from now as historians look back on this time, much of what we consider to be important will not be seen as important. In fact, much of what occupies our every day will fall away and become the chaff and dust of history. But i think what will be remembered and what will be judged by historians is our ability to accommodate these rising powers to transform
