During a stint in residential development on the West Coast, Richmond native Alex Griffith kept an eye out for deals in his hometown market.
Now back in town, he’s jumped on a commercial property in Shockoe Slip.
Earlier this month, Griffith paid $3.25 million for 1208-1212 E. Cary St., a 26,000-square-foot collection of four buildings that houses restaurant Sam Miller’s on the ground floor and offices on the upper levels.

A restaurateur from Hooville has become his own landlord in Carytown.
Andy McClure purchased 2907 W. Cary St., the building where his restaurant Citizen Burger Bar has operated for the last five years.
McClure paid seller Matt Donlon $1.45 million for the roughly 4,700-square-foot building.
“It’s every restaurateur’s dream to own the building they operate in, and I am so happy and proud to be the new owner of this Carytown landmark,” McClure said via text.

It didn’t take long for the LaDiff-anchored buildings in Shockoe Slip to catch the eyes of prospective buyers.
The 112,000-square-foot assemblage at 117-125 S. 14th St. listed about a month ago with a $10.5 million asking price is under contract to be purchased.
“We are now entering the due diligence phase and are in discussions with possible new owners,” said Andy Thornton, who owns the building and furniture business with wife Sarah Paxton.
Thornton said they received several offers but declined to comment further.

A trend of modern-design residential infills is continuing in Richmond’s Northside, where a local developer is planning a cluster of new townhomes on the edge of the Highland Park Southern Tip enclave.

Richmond-based Dorado Capital, led by developer Harsh Thakker, is planning a dozen modern townhomes on just over an acre at 2705 Fifth Ave. in the neighborhood, also known as the Chestnut Hill/Plateau Historic District.
