JAX Chamber President Daniel Davis, who is often talked about in Jacksonville political circles as a possible candidate for mayor in 2023, raked in $1.3 million in January for a political committee that could fuel a high-powered race if he does launch a campaign.
Many of the contributions came from donors who also heavily backed Lenny Curry in his successful campaigns for mayor. Term limits will prevent Curry from running again, so it will be wide-open race in two years.
Davis, a Republican, served on City Council in a Westside district from 2003-10 and then in the state Legislature from 2010-14. He has been president of the chamber of commerce since 2013.
So we shouldn’t have been surprised by how he reacted Monday to the release of an investigative report from a Jacksonville City Council committee examining the failed sale of JEA.
Between February and December 2020, the committee and its special counsel interviewed dozens of witnesses and reviewed more than 600,000 documents.
You can wade through piles of those documents online. (Or you can let my colleagues who seem to enjoy such tasks do it and read their coverage.) But one of the biggest takeaways is this: The report says Curry and his administration were deeply involved in the sale effort that fell apart about a year ago, leading to both a federal investigation and the one done by this City Council committee.
