HELENA â On a party-line vote with Republicans in favor, the state Senate Thursday advanced a bill that forbids businesses or the government from making vaccinations a condition of employment or receiving services.
âThis is the camelâs nose under the tent, the foot in the door,â said Sen. Tom McGillvray, R-Billings, arguing for the bill. âThis is the opportunity to not just have vaccine status on a passport, but your religious preference, your political identity, what you believe, what you think.â
The Senate endorsed House Bill 702 on a 31-19 vote, setting up a final vote in the coming days and then another vote in the House before the measure would be sent to Gov. Greg Gianforte for his signature.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) The Montana Senate voted Thursday to advance a measure banning the use of vaccine passports and prohibiting workplaces from requiring vaccinations as a condition for employment.
Dozens of supporters of the measure, mostly unmasked, packed the Senate gallery. They erupted into cheers and applause when the Senate voted to advance the measure 30-19, largely along party lines with Republicans in favor.
The vote came after Benefis Health System, a health care provider in Great Falls, announced earlier this month it would require all its employees to get the COVID-19 vaccine, which has received emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration.
A Senate panel Friday rejected a judicial appointment made in the last administration and approved another, sending Judge Peter Ohman of Gallatin County to the full chamber for confirmation consideration.
Judge Michele Reinhart Levine, who has been presiding over the bench in Cascade County since she was appointed in November, was rejected.Â
The resolution carrying her confirmation will still go to the full Senate, although it s now tagged with a report on the committee s rejection. If the full Senate rejects her appointment, her judgeship ends the same day as the Senate s vote, a spokesperson for the Senate GOP said Friday.
