Chris Hutchins, Sir Tom’s former publicist, recalled going to check-in on the singer’s wife one day to discover a “terribly, terribly sad” sight.
He said: “It was mid-morning and she was in this huge house on St George’s Hill (in London), a mansion, and she did all the cleaning herself.
“She was dancing to one of Tom’s CDs with a duster in one hand and a bottle of Dom Pérignon in the other.
“She was swigging it from the neck and, in many ways, this was amusing – in other ways, it was terribly, terribly sad.”

The Welsh singer, 80, tied the knot with Linda at the age of 16, several years after they first met on the school playground, in Pontypridd. They had one son, Mark Woodward, now 63, and were married for 59 years before she died from lung cancer five years ago. During that time, Sir Tom rose from working men s clubs singer to international entertainer, “sex symbol” and recently, a star judge on ITV’s The Voice.
Sir Tom and The Squires, his former band, rose to fame in the Sixties before they shot to number one in UK charts with the hit It’s Not Unusual.
After that, they toured the US where scores of women claimed to have slept with the singer – despite him being married.
Sir Tom previously confessed to more than 250 affairs a year at the height of his fame, in a 2012 Telegraph article.
He claimed his affairs “never hurt anybody” and that his “marriage was solid” – but later detailed one explosive clash where Linda “chinned” him after discovering an affair.
