Boys High go down to King s College in Auckland

Boys’ High scored first, but King’s fought their way into a 24-16 halftime lead. It was 24-16 with eight minutes to go and King’s scored two more tries. King’s took advantage of some Boys’ High communication breakdowns and scored three tries through their dangerous midfield. King’s also ruled the breakdown and stole ball. Coach Dan Turnock said they had a few chances in the second half, but weren’t clinical enough. He said they were being competitive in games, but not when it came to the big moments. Midfielder Leo Gordon was strong again and openside flanker Tom Illston-Park, in his cap game for eight white jersey starts, grabbed a few turnovers.

Gutsy away win for Feilding High School over Wesley College

Wesley took the lead in the first half when they booted through a loose ball about 50 metres and eventually scored. They took an 8-0 lead into halftime. Feilding put in a lot of defensive work in the first half and had a couple of scoring opportunities, but didn’t finish off. In the second spell Feilding spent a lot of time in Wesley’s half and with six minutes to go, were finally rewarded when hooker Vernon Bason drove over to score the winning try. “We got stuck in during the second half, we just couldn’t get our attack going,” Lock said.

Boys High beat New Plymouth to get back on track in Super 8

Boys’ High’s defence stood up to waves of New Plymouth attack. Boys’ High missed a couple of penalties and a dropped goal which would have eased the pressure, before they were awarded a late penalty which Heaphy kicked to make it more comfortable. Both sides struggled to move the ball, so it was a defence-dominated game, with Oudenryn making lots of tackles and carries. Flankers Tom Illston-Park and Joe Simpson-Smith and second five-eighth Leo Gordon were other workhorses on defence. Boys’ High are away this weekend against Tauranga Boys’ College. Feilding High School’s hopes of reaching the Central North Island competition playoffs look to be over after a 38-10 loss to St Peter’s School from Cambridge at Feilding.
