The end of next month will mark one year after George Floyd was killed by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, leading to an eruption of Black Lives Matter protests across the country in 2020. Eight days after his death, Black Out LSU organized students to peacefully demonstrate against police brutality and racial inequality in the Quad. It would be the first protest of many in a year at LSU that was characterized by student activism. From the protests that erupted in Baton Rouge after the death of George Floyd, to the sit-in protests against the University’s mishandling of sexual assault allegations, students have put constant pressure on local leaders and administrators throughout the 2020-21 school year.

(AP) Eight candidates seeking to be Louisiana State University s next president were chosen Wednesday by a search committee for interviews, including the leader of another college system in the state and Gov. John Bel Edwards top budget adviser. LSU is seeking a new president in the middle of a sexual misconduct scandal, which was seen as dampening interest in the job, which has been open since an interim president took over the position in January 2020. The Advocate reports that 23 candidates submitted applications to oversee a system that includes colleges, medical schools, a law school and research institutions across the state. The president also works as chancellor of Louisiana’s flagship university in Baton Rouge.

Bills to fix gaps in policies briskly moved forward at the Capitol Wednesday morning. Lawmakers are looking to add more oversight to make sure victims’ voices are being heard. “We’ve got to put value on the security of our students and this is the effort you see in place,” said Sen. Beth Mizell. Sen. Mizell and Sen. Regina Barrow presented legislation to the Senate Committee on Education that further define Title IX policies. Both are members of the Senate Select Committee on Women and Children. For the past month they’ve held special meetings to hear from from sexual assault victims and LSU leaders on why policies weren’t being followed.
