Embodied carbon and fire safety to be bolted onto architecture curriculum

Architecture students will have to learn about climate science and embodied carbon, as well as fire safety, procurement routes and ethics, under proposals put out for consultation by the ARB
The architects’ regulator has unveiled new guidance which significantly expands the existing provisions for sustainability and fire and life safety in the architecture curriculum – with universities being told they should teach a range of subjects relating to the topics for the first time.

The extensive list of subjects (
see below) include the importance of promoting regenerative design and sharing building performance data as well as, in the wake of the Grenfell tragedy, the science of fire and smoke spread and the health and safety effects of poor design decisions.
