But it wasn’t always this way. Pride has evolved from a one-day event to a month-long celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. According to The New York Times, the first Pride march took place on June 28, 1970. (Some historians also credit Chicago activists with organizing the first Pride march a day earlier on June 27, 1970.) The organizers wanted to mark the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, a series of spontaneous protests that took place following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village in June 1969.
