Swimmer Ikee wins Olympic relay spot after leukemia battle Today 06:15 am JST Today | 06:29 am JST TOKYO Japanese swimmer Rikako Ikee said she didn t know what had just happened after qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics medley relay on Sunday, just two years after being diagnosed with leukemia. Ikee, who only resumed training in March last year after being hospitalised for around 10 months, won the 100-meter butterfly race at Japan s Olympic trials in Tokyo in a time of 57.77 seconds. That was not enough to earn her an individual spot at the coronavirus-delayed Tokyo Games, but it did make her eligible for Japan s relay team, capping an incredible comeback for the 20-year-old.

Monday, 5 April 2021 Ripples of appreciation and delight are spreading through the sporting world at the news of Rikako Ikee s qualification to swim at her home Olympics this summer, two years after she announced that she had leukaemia. At the time of the diagnosis in February 2019, the then 18-year-old had established herself as one of Japan’s poster athletes for the imminent Tokyo Olympics having won six golds and two silvers at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, where she was named the most valuable player of the multi-sport event. Ikee was released from hospital in January 2020, saying she would be focusing on qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
