Reckless burning charge against federal burn boss dismissed

PENDLETON — Criminal charges have been dismissed against Ricky Lane Snodgrass, the U.S. Forest Service employee charged with reckless burning after overseeing a prescribed fire in Grant County in October 2022. Charges were moved from Grant County Circuit Court to federal court in March 2024. An evidentiary hearing was scheduled for July 11 and a jury trial was tentatively set to start Nov. 12.

Burn boss arrest may have chilling effect on prescribed fires

Ricky Snodgrass had been overseeing a controlled burn in the Malheur National Forest in eastern Oregon. The fire escaped containment and burned roughly 20 acres.

Sheriff seeks public help after theft west of John Day | News

A property near milepost 157 on Highway 26 was the scene of theft early Saturday morning, said Grant County Sheriff Todd McKinley. McKinley said someone had broken into the property, between midnight and 6 a.m. on March 30. During the crime, an item was dragged to Highway 26, and then left on the side of the roadway until help arrived to load it in another vehicle, he said.
