County health officials ask for patience on COVID vaccine doses

Freeport, Illinois, weather: Area braces for winter storm, cold snap

Todd McKenna Special to The Journal-Standard FREEPORT With yet another severe winter storm, and bitterly cold temperatures and blustery winds forecast for the Freeport area this weekend, people without permanent shelter are looking for places to keep warm.  City officials and social service agency leaders are working together to help identify locations for emergency shelter. The main area of refuge for homeless individuals is the Freeport Area Church Cooperative shelter location at 514 S. Chicago Ave. FACC Director Jay Hurder said the shelter already has been busy this winter season and he expects to see the same faces this weekend.  The people out there that really need it are already here, Hurder said.

Aquin students spread kindness for all of February

Todd McKenna Special to The Journal-Standard FREEPORT Kids wearing pajamas, a cruise to a far-off destination and a tribute to gumballs are all part of what s happening at the Aquin School system to celebrate Catholic Schools Week.  But since COVID-19 has placed many restrictions on what can be done to mark the occasion, the Aquin Student Leaders Board decided to extend the celebration throughout the entire month of February to pack as much fun as they can into the event. The theme for February at Aquin Junior and Senior High School, as well as the elementary school, is kindness. Student leaders made sure most of the activities centered around some way to show kindness to others and set an example for others to do the same.

Wet snow collapses roof of Freeport Press/Pretzel City Paper

Todd McKenna Special to the Journal-Standard FREEPORT  The accumulation of snow from several winter storms took its toll on a Freeport business sending part of its roof crashing to the ground.  The building that houses Freeport Press/Pretzel City Paper at 1031 W. Empire St. was a heap of boards and other materials Sunday as the weight of snow that had accumulated on the roof was too much for the structure to hold and the roof caved in at some point overnight. The latest winter storm brought more than 5 inches of wet and heavy snow and the building s roof fell under that weight.
