A Lambton County resident in their 80s is the region’s latest COVID-19 casualty, health officials said Wednesday.
Lambton public health reported a 27
th local death from the disease when it released its online report. Dr. Sudit Ranade, Lambton’s medical officer of health, confirmed the fatality later that day via email, but added specific details related to the cause of death haven’t been clarified.

“It is suspected that COVID-19 worsened other underlying health conditions,” he wrote.
It marks the region’s second death connected at least in part to COVID-19 in the past week after going more than six months without any fatalities. The death of a 72-year-old man, reported last week by local health officials, wasn’t a direct result of the disease, Lambton public health said at the time, but the virus was a contributing factor.

A COVID-19 outbreak was declared Wednesday at a Chatham-Kent workplace with two active cases.
The workplace is not open to the public so is not being named by Chatham-Kent public health.

“We are working with the employer to contact and isolate anyone impacted at this workplace as we investigate two positive cases,” public health spokesperson Jeff Moco said.
One case was also confirmed at St. Anne elementary school in Blenheim. Twenty-two students and two staff members from one class were sent home to quarantine while two St. Anne bus students were also told to self-isolate, said spokesperson Todd Lozon of the St. Clair Catholic district school board.
