Even though this was the week of the Ploughing Championships it started badly on Monday with Colm Ó Mongáin replacing Claire Byrne (RTÉ Radio 1, weekdays, 10am). We listeners dislike change. Replacements for the regular presenters are not usually announced in advance and surely not every presenter can have been suddenly struck down overnight with flu. What has happened to Brendan O’Connor (RTÉ Radio 1, weekends, 11am), for example? Áine Kerr was replacing him for the weekend. Are listeners too stupid to be given some basic information on the absence of our regular presenters, even though the programmes are built around them and called after them? We just have to grit our teeth as the usual promotions roar on unabated.
