Representative image ERODE: A 21-year-old pregnant woman surrendered before Andhiyur village administrative officer (VAO) here on Friday evening saying that she had killed her husband by giving food laced with insecticides. VAO Muruganandham later handed her over to the police. Police said A Mythily, of Periyamolapalayam village, married N Nandha Kumar, 33, of Kaliannan Thottam near Andhiyur eight months ago. Nandha Kumar, a farmer, had married a woman two years ago and divorced her within four months. “Mythily became pregnant five months ago. Even after this, it seems Nandha Kumar compelled her to have sex with him and tortured her. So Mythily decided to kill him and gave insecticide-laced food on January 28,” S Ravi, inspector attached with the Andhiyur police station, said after questioning Mythily.

Representative image ERODE: Turmeric farmers hope for a brighter future with prices of the yellow spice increasing steadily after a gap of nine years. Prices have gone up from Rs 5,500 to Rs 8,000 per quintal since the first week of February due to low arrivals, farmers said. They hope it will cross Rs 12,000 on account of growing demand. The usual business was delayed due to unexpected rain during the Pongal festival, said M Sathyamurthy, secretary of the Erode Turmeric Merchants and Godown Owners Association. “Due to rain, harvesting was delayed. Farmers started harvesting only in the third week of January,” he told TOI. “We started business from February first week and are expecting good business in the coming months.”

Plastic worth Rs 50K seized in Erode dist | Erode News

Erode: Gobichettipalayam municipality officials conducted raids at the shops in the town and seized banned plastic materials worth Rs 50,000 on Wednesday. The municipality commissioner, Dhanu Murthy, said a team comprising health and sanitary officials had conducted surprise checks at more than 100 shops on Yakoop Street in the town on the day. “Banned plastic items were seized from two shops, which had stocked plastic carry bags, spoons, plates and other materials. We have imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on them,” the officer said. He has directed the health and sanitary officials to carry out similar drives against banned plastic items in the town in the coming days. “We have warned shopkeepers not to use banned plastic items. If they continue to sell them, their shops will be sealed and closed.”
