Peffley: National Arbor Day set aside to recognize the importance of trees
Ellen Peffley
National Arbor Day is celebrated each year on the last Friday in April, this year on April 30. Arbor Day is the official day set aside to recognize the importance of trees, a day to plant and care for trees.
Arbor Day was the idea of Julius Sterling Morton of Nebraska City, Nebraska. Mr. Morton noticed the lack of trees in Nebraska and encouraged citizens to set aside a specific day to plant a tree. He submitted to the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture a resolution “to set aside one day to plant trees, both forest and fruit.” On April 10, 1872, the first Arbor Day, more than 1 million trees were planted in Nebraska. Today Arbor Day is observed in all 50 states.
