Several months later, three of the four tenants at the Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust complex have either moved away or plan to move. The daughter of one tenant said she moved her mother out in late May because she was worried about her safety and mental health. “She was getting to the point of being scared to go out of her home, too scared to go to the letterbox,” she said. “It s all pretty horrific what we ve been through.” The woman said her mother had lived at the complex for about 12 years. “I used to love going down there and visiting her … and then all of a sudden these horrible strange things start happening and everybody starts looking stressed and anxious and nervous and having to escort each other to the bloody letterbox.”

The flat’s landlord, the Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust, said it could not discuss individuals or active cases, especially “where there are issues that may affect individual privacy or our work to find a resolution”. “As a responsible landlord, we are staying in touch with the residents as we continue to work with our tenants, residents and other agencies, to identify a resolution.”
