and that this new board of directors and the people that the bankruptcy jouj then appoint would then be in charge of making sure. what we don t want to happen is what happened with a lot of the tobacco settlement money. much of which didn t go actually to the people on the ground. i get a lot of feedback from people on social media about the fear they have as real pain patients for whom the creation of opioids was the one thing that kept them out of pain and they are saying their access to opioids they actually need and many would point out we re not addicted or addicts and they feel sometimes they re painted with a brush that anybody who does take an opioid there is no view whether or not it s legitimate that they should or shouldn t. right. the pendulum started to swing and a lot of times doctors were over reacting, cutting people off without giving them alternative treatments like medication assisted treatment or
bill passed by a vote of 103-7. all the republicans voted for it along with 43 of the 50 democrats. and it s kind of a miracle we have come to. this just a few months ago it looked like detroit was headed toward a cataclysmically nasty, drawn-out battle with lawsuits and counter suits. somehow against the odds, all the different stake hold verse been coming together. the big aist of the deal include nearly $195 million from the state from tobacco settlement money, $366 million from charitable foundation and $100 million from the detroit institute for the arts. now the deal would cut pensions for non-uniform retirees by 4.5%, reduce the cost of living adjustments for uniformed retirees as well as protect the valuable artwork at the detroit institute of the arts. the package of 11 bills would wipe out legal disputes stemming from the bankruptcy. it s deal supported by unions, bondholders and both parties, none of whom are easily brought into any kind of agreement. so, all good, right? no
funders wants to stop that cold, destroy the deal. its website, curiously screams no more bailouts, yet michigan is threatening to run ads against republicans voting for the bill and reach 90,000 conservatives in the state to pressure lawmakers and blow it all up. joining me now, scott hager strom, a michigan state director for americans for prosperity. scott, if all these people, the bond holders, the biggest stakeholders, people whose livelihoods depend on this, if both parties agree, why are you going in to blow this up? we are not blowing this up. the fact is michigan taxpayers, hard-working taxpayers, do not need to be sending $195 million of their hard-earned money to detroit. your taxes are detroit is sitting on tobacco settlement money. it is not. actually out of the rainy day fund. they changed that at the last minute. they gutted pension reforms of the bill taxes are not going to go up. your taxes are not going to go up? we have a lot of priorities in mi
of the full faith and credit of the united states. we have plenty of money coming in to payoff the interest and the debt, take it off the table. and takeoff the military pay issue off the table. if you have a spouse at home and their husband or wife are serving our military in the tile of war, you take that issue off the take. the military shouldn t be pawns. and the full fate and credit of the united states shouldn t be pawns. take it off the table and haggle about the rest. greta: one of the other issues this afternoon, moody s say they may downgrade our credit rating. if that happens it is going to cost us more money to borrow and we know we need more money because we can t pay our bills dependent upon not paying the interest on the debt. that s a very small amount of money relatively speaking. we can easy do that. i had a press conference today with representative steve king and gomer we don t get
