that the inquest would be closed for all outside parties, including. district attorney. my conversation was, okay, what s my responsibility. they said you know nothing yet, it was in accident. had been district attorney for ten years and a democrat for future political. [inaudible] i supported the kennedys from the beginning since our late president john kennedy was president. he was a personal friend, and i mated edward kennedy for the presidency at chicago in the massachusetts delegation in 1968. i just knew he didn t want to get involved with a hot potato and he didn t want to deal with it. the conversation with him was well, you re the district attorney. you re the one that should be investigating, not me, that s your job.
accident. legally you have to report it. he said i will as soon as i get back so then he jumped into the water the mecca suddenly jumped into the water and impulsively swam across, nearly drowning once again in the effort. he got caught twice in a severe undercurrent. full-time he thought he was finished. somehow he struggled out of it and clambered back up on the sand and made his way to the motel room and pass out. all kinds of scrambled thoughts, all of them confused, some of them irrational, many of them which i cannot recall. the 13 minute speech was also a plea to the voters of massachusetts and to whom he gave an ultimatum. he said he was going to ask the people of massachusetts to help him decide whether to stay in the senate.

[inaudible] local radio and tv responded, they were taking phone calls and running three and four to one in favor of the senator. we feel he is human and people do make mistakes. were at a crossroad. he survived, politically.
