Negotiations aimed at luring the NHL’s Washington Capitals and the NBA’s Washington Wizards to northern Virginia have “ended,” and the proposal to create a development district with a new arena for the teams "will not move forward,” the city of Alexandria said Wednesday. The move is a blow for Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who announced months ago with fanfare the outlines of a proposal negotiated with the teams' parent company to bring them across the Potomac River. “This should have been our deal and our opportunity,” Youngkin said.
Connor Hellebuyck stopped 23 shots for his fourth shutout of the season as the Winnipeg Jets beat the Washington Capitals 3-0 on Monday night. Hellebuyck improved to 30-14-3, becoming the fourth goalie this season to reach the 30-win mark. It was Hellebuyck's 36th career shutout.
Hendrix Lapierre has only been back with Washington for a couple of days, one of several injury call-ups from the minors, but he senses a little something different about the Capitals this time around. Lapierre scored twice Monday night as the Capitals beat the Ottawa Senators 6-3 in a good, old-fashioned goal fest, for their fourth victory in five games. “There’s an energy right now that’s special in this room, and guys are focused, so it’s great,” Lapierre said of a team that was missing regulars T.J. Oshie, Nic Dowd and Nick Jensen to injury and Sonny Milano to illness.
Rasmus Sandin snapped a tie with 4:59 left in the third period, and the Washington Capitals beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-3 for their third consecutive win on Thursday night. Connor McMichael had two goals for the Capitals, including an empty-netter. Anthony Mantha and Nicolas Aube-Kubel also scored, and Tom Wilson had two assists.
