proximity of the murders, police are not immediately convinced they re the work of one killer. frank salerno was an l.a. sheriff s homicide detective at the time. the traditional way of looking at serial killers is looking at an m.o., modus operandi. the killer gets into a habit or pattern he s comfortable with. in this case we weren t seeing that. we had victims whose throats were cut, beaten with tire irons, victims who were choked, victims who were shot. he was all over the place. after searching the ran-sacked crime scenes, however, investigators begin to detect a pattern. one of the common threads was the fact that a .22 was used in a number of cases, and we had a shoe print. the print found outside a window at one of the crime scenes is from a size 11 avia training shoe. gill carillo was another detective working the investigation. there wasn t enough physical evidence to know for sure if there was a serial killer. so the cases were continued to

we met several wards convicted of murder. they asked that we not use their last names. when i was like 12 years oldç i killed some guy who tried to kill my brother. and it was gang related. and i retaliated and been in here ever since. you shot him? no, we beat him to death with tire irons, lumberjacks, mops, stuff like that. the guy walked through the gate. i drew down on him with a .22. and told him he was selling dope and we told him not to sell dope in this particular area. he looked at me and tried to get the gun out of my hand. he ran up the stairs. i fired. he got shot seven times. and i killed him. me being 15, it excited me to shoot at somebody. because it made other people look at me and say, man, you see that guy, that s a cool guy there, it made me proud.
