Deadline Detroit | Ex-Detroit Cop Gets Nearly 7-year Prison Sentence for Extortion

  A former Detroit cop was sentenced Tuesday in federal court to six years and eight months in prison for extortion. Deonne Dotson, 49, was accused of accepting bribes from auto collision shops in exchange for referring stolen and  abandoned vehicles recovered in the city to their shops. Authorities say he also created false police reports in exchange for money from the businesses. Vehicle owners didn t know Dotson was paid by the collision shops when they agreed to have their cars fixed by the businesses.  Five other Detroit cops pleaded guilty and served prison time for similar crimes. All six officers were employed by the department when they committed the crimes.

Detroit police officer sentenced to 80 months in prison for abandoned vehicle towing scheme By David Komer online producer Published  DETROIT (FOX 2) - A former Detroit Police Department officer was sentenced to about six and a half years, or 80 months in federal prison following convictions for extortion on Tuesday, said Acting United States Attorney Saima Mohsin.     Deonne Dotson, 49, was convicted after an 8-day jury trial before United States District Judge Robert H. Cleland. The trial was conducted in November 2019, but Dotson’s sentencing was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dotson accepted bribes from owners and operators of automobile collision shops in exchange for referring stolen and abandoned vehicles recovered in the City of Detroit to their shops.
