To the editor: I enjoy reading the Enterprise every day. But what is the value of your Straw Polls? You include a disclaimer admitting they are unscientific and represent only a segment of the population. So why publish them? One could argue they are a form of spreading disinformation.
Timothy Mount (Editor’s note: We have been running these polls on our website for about 15 years, and in that time we have sometimes asked, as Mr. Mount does, whether they are worthwhile. We believe they are, for several reasons. First, they are not, as Mr. Mount suggests, a way of spreading disinformation. We do not ask people to question reality; we only ask their opinions. Second, we have safeguards to prevent double-voting. Third, it is important to know what your neighbors think; one of the most useful functions of an opinion forum is to inform readers about what their neighbors think and feel about the issues of the day.
