When veterinary and human sciences collaborate, cancer patients of all species benefit

Dakota, a 4-year-old French bulldog from Justin, Texas, has pushed the boundaries of what it means to be humanity’s best friend. She developed a glioma, a form of brain tumor that is particularly dangerous to both canines and humans. By working with veterinary scientists at Purdue University, Dakota received treatment for her cancer while also contributing to cancer research that may benefit both humans and canines.

Protective gear for the battlefield and beyond

UTA researchers investigating ‘smart’ helmets that could detect brain injuries Tuesday, Mar 09, 2021 • Herb Booth : Contact   A University of Texas at Arlington researcher is investigating the capabilities of “smart” protective helmets that could sense head and brain injuries and allow soldiers to more rapidly receive medical treatment. Ashfaq Adnan, a mechanical and aerospace engineering professor, has received a three-year, $1.1 million grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to study “smart” protective equipment in a dynamic environment. Kamesh Subbarao, also a mechanical and aerospace engineering professor, is a co-principal investigator on the project. “Our research will focus on the interface between the helmet and the brain and how to use smart sensing to recognize brain trauma,” Adnan said. “If we are successful, the results generated from this study will pave th

Researcher receives grant to study link between trauma and cellular, tissue damage in the brain

Researcher receives grant to study link between trauma and cellular, tissue damage in the brain A University of Texas at Arlington researcher has received an Office of Naval Research (ONR) grant to examine the mechanics of how blast-like events cause damage to the brain. Ashfaq Adnan, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, has received a three-year, $944,845 grant to study the potential link between blast-like trauma and cellular and tissue damage in the brain. By using ultra-high-speed cameras to capture dynamic events within a simulated brain, he will be able to look at rapid acceleration and deceleration to investigate what happens during such events.
