The 47 officers who make up the Brooklyn Center Police Department have little in common with the nearly 31,000 people they serve.
Most officers are white, while most residents are people of color. Nearly all officers are male, while the city is mostly female. And, according to Mayor Mike Elliott who in 2019 became the first person of color to lead the city not one officer lives within city limits.
Brooklyn Center in recent decades has transformed from a mostly white suburb into what is now one of the most diverse cities in Minnesota, while its police force has remained largely unchanged.
Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott faces biggest test yet A Liberian immigrant who moved to Minnesota at age 11, Elliott has used his pulpit to speak in support of racial equity reforms on several fronts. April 15, 2021 7:41pm Text size Copy shortlink:
Mike Elliott was elected Brooklyn Center s first Black mayor in 2018, swept into office as a charismatic change candidate who intimately understood one of Minnesota s most diverse cities and could transform it, as his campaign literature said, from stagnant status quo to a vibrant city.
Then, in a matter of moments on Sunday when Brooklyn Center police officer Kimberly Potter shot and killed Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man the stakes skyrocketed.
MINNEAPOLIS â The shooting of Daunte Wright could lead to criminal charges against former Brooklyn Center police Officer Kimberly Potter as soon as Wednesday, according to the county attorney handling the case.
Washington County Attorney Pete Orput said Tuesday that he s spent hours reviewing video and other evidence of the shooting and expects to file something â he didn t clarify what the charges would be â by Wednesday. We ve already done a great deal of research, Orput said, adding that prosecutor Imran Ali has been working on the case as well.
It would be just the second time a U.S. police officer faces criminal charges for fatally shooting someone with a service weapon in an apparent mix-up with their Taser.
