BROCKVILLE A major study of firefighting in Leeds and Grenville recommends that the 13 municipal fire departments be amalgamated into one.
The report, commissioned by the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, would see the 10 volunteer township fire departments and those of Brockville, Prescott and Gananoque melded into a “single, centrally managed” department under the command of a single fire chief.

Jon Hambides of Pomax, which produced the 105-page report, said it represented a “paradigm shift” in how firefighting was viewed, and he conceded that the study’s controversial recommendations would be met with opposition from some chiefs, firefighters, municipalities and the general public.
