Historic night: Rita Ali becomes Peoria s first female, Black mayor

PEORIA  History was made Tuesday night as the first woman and the first Black person was sworn in as Peoria s mayor.  Rita Ali beamed broadly as the oath of office was administered to her by newly elected City Clerk Stefanie Tarr, who then handed her the gavel while the room erupted in applause.  I would be remiss if I did not mention the historic meaning of today. The city has elected its first woman after 185 years, Ali said, before noting she was also the first Black person to wield the mayor s gavel.  Her election, she hoped, would break down barriers and prejudices.

Peoria City Council approves controversial car wash in North Peoria

PEORIA  After several months and at least two deferrals, the Peoria City Council voted Tuesday to approve a car wash that will replace a North Peoria shopping center. The council voted unanimously to allow the owners of the Glen Haven Shopping Center to sell the property to Club Car Wash, which will knock down the 66-year-old shopping center and a vacant house that is located just north of the shopping center that sits at the corner of Glen and University.  Members of the Joseph family, who owns the parcel, as well as City Councilman Tim Riggenbach, who represents the area, gave an impassioned plea for the council to approve the development.
