Clemson Battles, Falls to No 7 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. –  The Clemson men’s tennis team (10-13, 1-10 ACC) stole the doubles point and battled hard against No. 7 Virginia (19-4, 10-0 ACC) but came up short 4-1 Friday night.  The match started off on a high note for the Tigers as every court competed well a tough Virginia team. The Cavaliers secured the first victory on Court 2 by a score of 6-3, but shortly after Jorge Plans Gonzalez and Ryuhei Azuma upset No. 74 Woodall/Montes 6-3 to tie things up. It all came down to Court 3 where Tim Pitts and Nini Dica, playing as a doubles team for the first time, came up clutch and won in a tiebreaker, 7-6 to give the Tigers the 1-0 lead. While the Tigers looked to stay in the fight, the Cavaliers seized momentum in singles play, registering victories on Courts 6, 2 and 5 to give Virginia a 3-1 advantage. Azuma continued his streak of playing ranked opponents and took No. 10 Rodesch to a tiebreak in the second set on Court 1 but was unable to extend the match to a third set,

The live stream for the matches is available here. The Tigers got off to a hot start last weekend, defeating Furman 7-0 and Wofford 6-1 at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility. Redshirt freshman Nini Dica earned his first dual singles win and Ethan Silva registered his first dual doubles win. Clemson will face ETSU for only the fifth time in the history of the programs. Tigers Make it Four Straight against ETSU and The Citadel

CLEMSON, S.C. –  The Clemson men’s tennis team (4-0) defeated the ETSU Bucs (0-3) and The Citadel (1-5) on Saturday at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility to extend their winning streak to four. The day was highlighted by the first career win at line 1 for Matt Pitts and a doubles win from brothers M. Pitts and Tim Pitts.  Jorge Plans Gonzalez and Max Smith got the Tigers off to a great start to the Tiger’s doubleheader, defeating ETSU’s pair of Lombisano/Britez, 6-3. The Bucs were able to secure a win on Court 2, but a clutch 6-4 win on Court 3 from M. Pitts and Trey Stinchcomb gave the Tigers the doubles point.  The momentum continued for the Tigers as every player took the first set win, as Plans Gonzalez took his first set in a grueling tie break, 7-4.
