Updated story: Evacuation orders given as Munson Creek Fire flares

Updated: 6 p.m. Monday The Munson Creek Fire picked up in strength Monday afternoon, and borough officials sent an evacuation notice to everyone east of Mile 48 along Chena Hot Springs Road. The fire that was smoldering for the past few days intensified and got less than a mile from Chena Hot Springs at about 3 p.m., said Tim Mowry, public information officer for the Alaska Division of Forestry Wildland Fire & Aviation Program. The wind was expected to change in the next hour and influence the fire s behavior. Per fire managers’ request, the Fairbanks North Star Borough sent a Level 3 “Go” evacuation order at 4:15 p.m. to people from Mile 48 to Mile 56 along the road, advising local residents and guests at Chena Hot Springs resort to leave the area immediately.

Beth Ipsen, Bureau of Land Management Alaska Fire Service Spokesperson, says that every year during fire season, fireworks are prohibited in most places through-out Alaska. “Alaska state statute does specify that during the fire season which runs from April 1st to the end of August, fireworks are prohibited on private and public lands, forested lands. that means basically any lands that have vegetation whether it’s trees, shrubs, or grass. Mark Thiessen July 02, 2021 - 6:18 PM ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A wildfire burning near a hot springs resort close to Fairbanks crossed a ridgeline Friday two miles south of Chena Hot Springs Resort, a fire official said. About 100 firefighters moved back to set up protective measures around structures at the resort, along with recreational cabins and a few homes at the end of Chena Hot Springs Road. Residents and guests at the resort have been cautioned to have their bags ready in case they need to evacuate. “It’s far away, so we’re fine,” said Javier Javier Villasenor-Gaona, a vice president at the resort.
