Study of the Month - A short history of endgame study castling II

Free association is an interesting mechanism to make up introductions for articles. Let us try: "Music was my first love and it will be my last", John Miles sang many years ago. The "Children" of Caissa rather would see their "Circle of Life" in Chess, where the WCCT-7 theme might have been predicted by Phil Collins in "Against All Odds" (who also performed the song named in the previous quotation): "Take a look at me now! There's just an empty space!", the bishop in the Kozłowski study might say this. | Photos: Pixabay

Study of the Month - Gens una sumus: Friendship tourneys

Study of the Month: Darko, not Donnie

The Serbian name "Darko" comes from "Dar" for "gift". Good wishes are bestowed often upon our children, be it luck with the Biblical name "The son of luck" or "Benjamin", or in this case, the gift of being gifted. The third coming of Bobby Fischer?

The story captured headlines twenty years ago. Many people believe that Bobby Fischer has returned to chess and was performing miracles on the Internet. Nigel Short said he was "99 per cent sure" he has had played Fischer, author Tim Krabbé, who was initially sceptical, went on to see the light. In September 2001 we took a closer look at the evidence.

Tour de France stage 2: Chaos and control

Mathieu van der Poel imposed himself on the Tour after two crazy days in Brittany Mathieu van der Poel after winning stage 2 of the 2021 Tour de France (Image credit: Getty Images) Mathieu van der Poel did it all wrong. Tactically and strategically, his decisions on stage 2 of the 2021 Tour de France looked emotional and hot-headed. His attack the first time up the Côte de Mûr-de-Bretagne achieved nothing, though it did draw out a strong but very temporary counterattack by four more of the GC favourites. When Nairo Quintana attacked the second and final time up, Van der Poel did the chasing. Sonny Colbrelli attacked, and again, Van der Poel did the work of shutting him down.
