Farmworker housing advocates are facing some hard lessons from a pilot project that fell drastically short of its goal. Starting in 2012, a collaborative between the Marin Community Foundation and Marin County used a combination of public and private funds to build and renovate agricultural worker housing on ranches in West Marin. The group initially planned to fund 200 units within five years, but later sharply reduced the goal to 20 units.
In the end, only a dozen units were built, while the need for more affordable housing never went away.
“There were a number of lessons learned, including that using public funding on private land is really challenging,” said Leelee Thomas, the planning manager with the Marin County Community Development Agency who led the project.

The Shoreline Unified School District board voted last week to bring Shoreline Acres under its control starting this fall. The move is intended to align the Tomales preschool with the elementary school, boost staff retention by offering employees health insurance and allow for easier access to state funding. While trustees had some questions about the budget, they were ultimately in full support of the proposal, whose cost is covered by tuition, donations and state scholarships.
“It’s been a goal of boards I’ve been sitting on for 20 years to have preschools under the roof of the Shoreline district,” trustee Tim Kehoe said.

Like many good stories of turning a passion into a profession, Gail Coppinger and Scott Woodson started out in a garage. They were brewing beer, learning the ins and outs of turning grain into liquor and falling in love with the craft the art, the science and the smell.
