In celebration of "OAKtober" and to positively impact the long-term health of oak ecosystems in the Chicago region, the Nicor Gas Foundation presented a $100,000 grant to support The Morton Arboretum s Ecosystem Recover Program.
The Kansas State Fair Board agreed Tuesday to take bids on some construction and building upgrade projects on the fairgrounds, including a long-delayed estimated $2.37 million project at the Expo I horse exhibition center.
A few should be done in time for this year’s state fair, and others – including the Expo center – won’t start until it’s over.
Even then, however, at least two buildings on the grounds that are currently closed to the public – the Capper Building and the Bison Arena – will remain so, as will the Encampment Building dormitories.
Most of the Fair Board took an hour-long tour of the grounds Tuesday morning, before going into a several-hour retreat and then holding its May board meeting.
Kansas State Fair officials surprised local fire officials on Tuesday by proposing to reverse the fair’s position on the location of a new fire station on the edge of the fairgrounds.
Interim Fair General Manager Ed Berger broke the news about the desired change to Hutchinson Fire Chief Steve Beer and Deputy Chief Doug Hanan when they appeared to update the State Fair Board on progress for the station.
The plan for a new station has been in the works since 2015, but Beer said he hopes to budget for construction yet this year.
Beer was there to offer the board a look at conceptual drawings and a blueprint for the station located on the northwest corner of the grounds, near gate 3 and off of 23rd Avenue. The design drawings, he said when asked, cost the department $25,000 to prepare.
