Frontiers | Tilapia Lake Virus-Induced Neuroinflammation in Zebrafish: Microglia Activation and Sickness Behavior

In mammals, the relationship between the immune system and behavior is widely studied. In fish, however, the knowledge concerning the brain immune response and behavioral changes during brain viral infection is very limited. To further investigate this subject, we used the model of tilapia lake virus (TiLV) infection of zebrafish (Danio rerio), which was previously developed in our laboratory. We demonstrated that TiLV persists in the brain of adult zebrafish for at least 90 days, even when the virus is not detectable in other peripheral organs. The virions were found in the whole brain. During TiLV infection, zebrafish displayed a clear sickness behavior: decreased locomotor activity, reduced food intake, and primarily localizes near the bottom zone of aquaria. Moreover, during swimming individual fish exhibited also unusual spiral movement patterns. Gene expression study revealed that TiLV induces in the brain of adult fish strong anti-viral and inflammatory response and up-regulates

Global $9 2 Billion Tilapia Market to 2027: Accelerated Development of Aquaculture has Catalysed the Growth of the Market

Share this article Share this article ResearchAndMarkets.com s offering. Global Tilapia Market is expected to reach US$ 9.2 Billion by 2027, from US$ 7.9 Billion in 2020 Tilapia Industry globally is expected to grow with a CAGR of 2.20% from 2020 to 2027. Tilapia is a genus of Cichlidae family and is mainly freshwater fish that resides in shallow streams, ponds, rivers and lakes. Globally, Tilapia is one of the numerous consumed farmed fishes. Historically, this versatile fish was of prominent influence in mainly African and Middle Eastern provinces. But now, it is absorbed globally and gaining popularity in Asian and American countries. It is reasonable and mild in taste, making it a suitable replacement for costly options like salmon.

Genetic parameters for resistance to Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV) in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV) is one of the primary disease concerns for tilapia farming, with mass mortality events and biosecurity restrictions threating aquaculture in several continents. Selective breeding for improved host resistance to TiLV may help to mitigate this problematic disease, but the extent of genetic variation in resistance is not yet known. The objective of the current study was to estimate genetic parameters for host resistance to TiLV in a Nile tilapia breeding population of the Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) strain. Tilapia researcher gets international fellowship Updated: Updated: Sreeja Lakshmi to study development of a vaccine for aquaculture industry Share Article Sreeja Lakshmi to study development of a vaccine for aquaculture industry Sreeja Lakshmi, a researcher in Tilapia, has been awarded a fellowship to study the development of a nano particle vaccine to be used in India s aquaculture industry. Tilapia is a very important fish in India’s aquaculture industry. Over the past decade, the Tilapia Lake Virus has been causing havoc among producers of this fresh water fish. If one infected fish gets into the water, it takes only four to ten days for the infection to spread to the other fish,” she said.
