necessary paperwork to be sent to colombia, there s a long line of people who fell for the story. here s why i don t get that. i understand that teenagers will lie sometimes, but i also understand that the united states government is pretty meticulous on its paperwork. having been an immigrant myself. so why wasn t there some fingerprinting done? the way i get it, you have to get fingerprints to match an i.d., you can t just say you re tika cortez who i think was of age, 21 years old and get away with it. someone s going to check it out. this is what i ve been told by immigration officials. is that she was foimped on the local level. she was fingerprinted again when she was passed over to i.c.e. but nothing matched anyone that was in the system. so it was essentially in the words of one person i spoke to, it was like a clean slate. this person was in their view, brand-new, brand-new to them. obviously this is still very early. all of this will change. there were some initial report

her family is demanding answers. ed lavandera out of texas with more on this. ed, what do you make of this? kyra, this is simply a bizarre story. . started in november of 2010 when jakadrien turner runs away from home here in dallas, texas. her family searched, her grandmother, really, who spent hours and hours tracking her friends through facebook, started getting inklings that perhaps jakadrien was in houston. in april of last year, april 2011, she is arrested for theft. shoplifting at a mall there in houston. but, instead of giving authorities her real name, we re told that she gave them the name of tika cortez with a birth date that suggested she was 21 years old. she then makes it through the local criminal court and she pled guilty and spent four days in jail and then gets remanded over to custody of immigration
it s not her personality. there has to be adults involved. no 14-year-old can change their name and get to colombia. on their own. last april, she was arrested for shoplifting in a houston mall, but instead of giving police her real name, she claimed to be 21-year-old tika cortez from colombia. after pleading guilty to the theft charge, she was turned over to federal immigration agents. somehow, turner managed to keep the false identity alive. she convinced the immigration system she was cortez and then convinced the colombian government and got the necessary papers to be deported. there were bulletins spread around. the dallas run away is even featured on missing and exploited children. from where i sit, someone
name and getting to colombia? i mean, there has to be adults involved. no 14-year-old can change their name and get to colombia on their own. i just don t understand how it happened. someone made a goof. and i think it s within i.c.e. or someone. they goofed up. yeah, they dropped the ball. reporter: some of the initial reporting on this story, kyra, suggested that this young woman had given authorities the name of this tika cortez name, it would have been someone who was already in i.c.e. files and someone who was scheduled to be deported. i.c.e. officials say that is not the case. we have been able through our colleagues at cnn espagnole, jakadrien turner is in a foster care situation in colombia. we re trying to figure out how she can be returned.
