Former Gillette resident returns to challenge Cheney

GILLETTE A Campbell County High School graduate and U.S. Army veteran is running for Wyoming’s lone U.S. House of Representatives seat in 2022.
Denton Knapp, a 1983 CCHS grad who served for 30 years in the U.S. Army, has announced that he will challenge Republican Rep. Liz Cheney.
Knapp, who now lives in California but is moving back to Gillette, said he’s wanted to go into public service since high school and that “now is a good time to do it.”

GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) A retired U.S. Army colonel from California says he will challenge Liz Cheney in next year’s Republican U.S. House primary in Wyoming.
Denton Knapp, of Trabuco Canyon, California, said he plans to move back to Gillette, where he graduated from high school in 1983, the Gillette News Record reported Monday.
Five Republicans as of Monday had filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission stating their intent to run against Cheney in 2022.
The list didn’t include Knapp yet but has been growing amid Republican discontent with Cheney for continuing to dispute former President Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated claim that vote fraud cost him re-election.

Cheney was among 10 Republican representatives who voted to impeach Trump over the deadly insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6. She has called her impeachment vote an act of conscience in defense of democracy and the Constitution.

Cheney has been facing criticism from many in her party after her vote to impeach former president Donald Trump and her recent condemnation for the Republican Party s lack of acknowledgement of the events on the January 6.
While Knapp has not had any previous political experience, he has served in the military for 30 years, graduating from West Point in 1987, serving in Afghanistan and Iraq in 2003, 2005, and 2012, and finally retiring in 2017.
Since then Knapp has worked as director for the Tierney Center for Veteran Services, Goodwill Industries of Orange County, an organization that helps veterans with employment and healthcare.
