On a fine Saturday morning, swimmers took the plunge into the Atlantic Ocean to raise money for Canadian Mental Health Association of NL’s annual Tickle Swim fundraiser
It's long, it's cold and it's tiring, but for 11 years now swimmers have pushed themselves to cross the Tickle from Portugal Cove-St. Philip's to Bell Island in the name of mental health.
Nine years have passed since Sheilagh O'Leary swam across the Tickle, from Portugal Cove to Bell Island, for the first time. Since then, the event has grown in size and raised funds for the provincial branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association. Both O'Leary and first-time participant Michelle Young-Hadden reflect on the importance of mental health awareness work.
