9 killed, 140 missing in India as broken glacier causes devastating flooding Peter Sblendorio
Devastating flooding in India killed at least nine people and left 140 others missing after a glacier broke in the state of Uttarakhand on Sunday.
Multiple hydropower plants and several homes were damaged after part of the Nanda Devi glacier split, which released an intense stream of water that had previously been blocked by the icy structure, according to officials.
Debris was picked up and carried by the flooding water as it roared through the state’s Tapovan region.
Many residents were told to evacuate the areas impacted by the flooding as officials searched for missing people.
