Natalia Smüt, 24 a Black, Puerto Rican transgender woman, was stabbed to death in Milpitas, California, last Friday. Smüt , a local drag legend, is the 17th reported transg person to be violently killed so far in 2022, and the second trans victim of violence in less than a week.
According to a report in the
East Bay Times, Smut was stabbed to death Friday night in the Northern California city of Milpitas by Elijah Cruz Segura, 22, of nearby Union City. Segura, 22, was arraigned Tuesday where he faced charges of murder with a weapon enhancement for the use of a knife in the killing, but he did not enter a plea during his brief courtroom appearance.
Tiara Banks’ tragic death is the 16th violent death of a transgender or non-binary person to occur this year.
Banks was killed on April 21 in the West Pullman neighbourhood of Chicago on Wednesday, according to the Human Rights Campaign.
Tiara was attacked in her Ford Fusion when a shooter approached the vehicle and shot her multiple times. The 24-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
Howard Brown Health, a community-based LGBTQ+ health organisation based in Chicago, announced the news of Tiara’s death online.
The midwest health centre shared a heartfelt message in honour of Tiara and called for an end to the “epidemic of anti-trans violence”.

Black transgender woman Tiara Banks was shot to death in Chicago last Wednesday, making her at least the 16th trans, nonbinary, or gender-nonconforming person to die by violence in the U.S. this year.
Banks, 24, was sitting alone in her car that night in the West Pullman neighborhood on the city’s far south side when someone shot her several times, according to the Human Rights Campaign. Local TV station WGN reported on the crime but did not give Banks’s name. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
