Childhood obesity, high blood pressure, cholesterol linked to poor cognitive performance in mid-30s and beyond Having cardiovascular risk factors from childhood to adulthood is linked to poor cognitive performance in a person’s 30s, 40s and 50s, according to new research that followed children over three decades. Researchers said the study was the first to highlight the impact of lifelong cardiovascular risk factors on the brain at midlife. The more cardiovascular risk factors a person had such as obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels the lower they performed on memory and thinking tests, according to the study published Monday in the American Heart Association journal Circulation.

If you walked past Lost Weekend, the coffee shop on lower Orchard Street last week, you might have noticed something beautiful in the window: a multi-level terrarium (it looked especially stunning at night).  The temporary exhibition was not just something nice to gaze at on a warm summer evening; it was part of an innovative project being orchestrated by three urban designers. Huy Bui, Carlos Gomez de Llarena and Jon Schramm have developed Plant-in-City, which at its most basic level, is made up of a sleek cedar planter, environmental sensors, a built-in irrigation system and an app connecting the whole ecosystem to the internet. Yes, there is an app, allowing owners to care for their terrariums no matter where they might be.

John Simmons, ASC has a prolific career as both a cinematographer and still photographer, and he recently shared his photographs, their stories and inspirations with the Getty Museum. Simmons’ work was featured in the Getty’s “Art Stories,” which offer perspectives on artists and their work. In a Q&A with the Getty’s digital producer Thuy Bui, titled “A Photograph Has to Be Like Music,” Simmons was asked “about his lifelong investment in Black visibility and his early days of capturing everyday moments on the streets of Chicago.”

Westmoreland group weighs in on lack of local input, challenges in vaccine rollout

Members of the Voice of Westmoreland, a local grassroots organizing group, raised a call for the county to establish a health department during an online town hall forum on the vaccine rollout in the region. The online town hall brought together representatives from Service Employees International Union, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Healthcare PA, the Greater Greensburg-Jeannette NAACP and Westmoreland Community Action as well as 220 households. Participants weighed in with questions and complaints throughout the two-hour forum Tuesday that featured state Sen. Lindsey Williams and speakers from U.S. Sen. Bob Casey’s office, the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Gov. Tom Wolf’s office as well as a panel of medical experts.
