Health unit announces five new COVID-19 cases Thunder Bay District Health Unit announces new cases at jail, correctional centre, and a district First Nation Jan 31, 2021 9:37 AM By: TbNewsWatch.com Staff THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported five new confirmed cases of COVID-19 Sunday. The number of active cases in the district dropped by two, to 143, thanks to seven newly resolved cases. That figure has dropped significantly since hitting an all-time high of 186 active cases on Friday. Four of the cases announced Sunday involve individuals in the Thunder Bay area: three were associated with an outbreak at the Thunder Bay District Jail, and another with an outbreak at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre.

Province Reports Over 2,000 COVID-19 Cases

COVID-19 infections are gradually declining across the province, with 2,063 more confirmed this morning. The seven-day average count of new cases has been heading downward since January 11th, when it reached 3,555. Ontario is also seeing a spike of 73 more COVID-19-related deaths. Another 14 people have been infected with COVID-19 in the Thunder Bay District. That includes five new cases in the outbreak at the Thunder Bay District Jail, and two more infections at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre. Three caught the virus through close contact, one travelled outside Northwestern Ontario, and another three cases are still under investigation. However, we are seeing a drop in active cases, as the Thunder Bay District Health Unit announces 54 people are no longer testing positive. That brings the active case count to 145.

One New COVID Case Saturday

The Northwestern Health Unit is reporting just one new positive case of COVID-19 Saturday. It comes from the Sioux Lookout region. Follow up with the person involved and their contacts has started and anyone identified will be notified directly. The Thunder Bay District Health Unit recorded 14 new cases including five at the Thunder Bay District Jail, and two more at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre. The active case count is at 145. In an interview with Acadia Broadcasting Premier Doug Ford noted it’s on their radar. “I had a conversation with the solicitor general she is all over that. I know they have the support in there right now and we are going to continue supporting,” said Ford. The premier is hoping to get employees at the facilities vaccinated adding “I’m always concerned about the prisoners, but I’m more concerned about the correctional officers and getting them vaccinated as soon as possible.”
