Rhode Island Fishing Report – January 21, 2021
Trout and and holdover stripers in Connecticut are the best bet for the upcoming days of cold weather.
Cory, with the
Frances Fleet, says they have not been out recently because of the windy conditions. However, they did well last week, with 5-to-10 pound cod coming over the rail. Cory says diamond jigs and clams are working best. The Frances Fleet will resume their fishing trips when there is a break in the weather.

Evan, at
Black Hall Outfitters in Old Lyme, says the fishing in Connecticut remains consistent across the board. Freshwater fishing in the northern part of the state is dependent on ice. Evan says live bait and jigs are working well for trout and bass. Where there is open water, blade baits and small swimbaits are good choices. The temperatures for much of the upcoming week will be below freezing and much of the water will shift to ice. On the saltwater side of things, the Housatonic Rive

With steady weather for the next few days, there are opportunities for trout, holdover stripers, and bottom fish on the party boats.
Cory, of the
Frances Fleet in Point Judith, says the boat has not been fishing recently due to the weather conditions, but the next few days are promising. In late December, anglers on their party boat were catching a mixed bag of bottom fish, with cod to 15-pounds, 4-pound black sea bass, porgies, ling, and weakfish. Clams and diamond jigs were working best when the weather cooperated. Visit the Frances Fleet website to book a trip.

Trout, panfish, and tidal holdover stripers to 40-inches continue to keep anglers busy during the winter months.
Ted, at
Three Belles Outfitters in Niantic, says anglers are finding holdover stripers in some of the holes around the Connecticut River. There have been some reports further up river of crappie, yellow perch, and white perch. Ted says the action north has been in the coves around the Hartford area. Blade baits and hair jigs are working well. He has not heard of any ice fishing reports.
Rich, at
Fisherman’s World in Norwalk, says some of the local anglers are catching Atlantic Herring in the harbors on Sabiki rigs. He anticipates the action will be picking up, as the fishing is not in full swing yet. Most anglers are sticking to the tidal river winter striper holdover fishery. Rich says there have been fish into the 40-inch range because the weather has been on the milder side, making the bass more active. Albie Snax

Captain Frank, of
The Frances Fleet in Point Judith, reports that they were finally able to get back on the water on Wednesday and the results were much better than the weekend. The water has cleaned up a bit and they were able to put together a nice mix of cod, scup, black sea bass and a few weakfish. They will continue to fish on a daily basis if the weather allows; all reservations can be booked online. They are also offering gift cards for the holiday season, which can be purchased on their website and sent via e-mail.

Holdover striped bass action is holding steady and freshwater fishing continues to produce on open water without skim ice.
Andrew, at
Fishin Factory III in Middletown, told me that school striped bass can still be found around the mouth of the river, but most of the local linesider anglers are heading to the Housatonic or the Thames for some solid holdover bass action. Reports of school bass are plentiful once again after a small delay due to the rainstorm last week. Most boats have stayed tied to the docks this week, but those that have gotten out are still finding some nice sea bass and cod at Coxes and around the Block. Freshwater anglers continue to report good trout fishing in the Salmon River Farmington TMAs. The Connecticut River was fishing very well for pike and panfish prior to the storm and should continue to do so as it cleans up in the coming weeks. With the exception of some smaller places in higher elevations, all th
